Whether you can directly heat food in a paper container in a microwave or oven is not a simple yes or no question. If you don't pay attention to the details, not only will the food taste different, but you might also make a mess in the kitchen.
The most reliable method is to check if the paper container is labeled "microwave safe" or has a small microwave icon printed on the bottom. Modern takeout containers and paper bowls designed for heating usually have this icon. If it's not there, you should be cautious.
Many Chinese takeout containers or some high-end paper packaging have small metal handles or aluminum foil edges for durability or aesthetics, or even have shimmering gold edges printed on the paper. These paper containers with metal parts should absolutely not be put in the microwave. Heating them will cause sparks and crackling, which is very dangerous.
If you look closely, many paper cups for coffee or paper bowls for soup have a shiny inner wall. That's a plastic or wax coating to prevent the paper from getting soggy.
Wax coating: This type of paper container is only suitable for cold drinks. When heated, the wax will melt into the food.
Plastic film: Some plastic films that are not heat-resistant will soften, peel off, or even emit unpleasant odors when heated, contaminating your food.
Paper itself is flammable. If you use a very dry, very thin paper container for a long time, and the food inside is also dry (such as heating a dry bun), the paper temperature will rise too quickly and may turn yellow or even smoke. Therefore, paper packaging is more suitable for short-term warming, not long-term cooking at high heat.
Even if the paper container is safe, prolonged heating will cause the paper to absorb steam and oil from the food, gradually softening it and increasing the risk of leakage. When you reach for it, the bottom of the cardboard container might detach, spilling hot soup and food everywhere, easily scalding your hands.
Many times, the paper container itself is fine, but the transparent lid on top is usually made of plastic. Many people forget to remove the lid before putting it in the microwave, and the lid instantly shrinks into a crumpled mess. Remember to lift or remove the lid before heating.
